WELCOME TO THE ENERGY CLUB!

WHAT WE DO:

Our main event are weekly Energy Chats where an invited speaker will present on an area of their work in the energy landscape.  We try to bring events that will present an energy topic that touches the technology, economics, and policy.

In the spring we host the Southeastern Energy Conference where we have several invited speakers and panel sessions and a poster session and more.

We have a team participating in the DOE Solar District Cup and an ongoing project in collaboration with GTRI.  We’re always looking to grow and offer more opportunities for our members.  Let us know your ideas or participate in any activities we already offer.

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN:

The Energy Club will teach you the complex interactions in the energy landscape: technology, economics, and policy.  You will be better prepared to energy the industry and have a more holistic perspective of this crucial infrastructure.

We would love it if you joined the club and participated in any way you’re interested in.  We are always looking to grow and if you have an idea for an event, topic, project, etc. that you want to do as part of the club, we have the ability to sponsor your ideas.

ONGOING PROJECTS

Collapsible Solar Panel Array

Our solar array will be able to be moved around campus and double as a demo unit for our outreach program. We’re in search of people interested in constructing physical structures and designing intricate fittings to facilitate the movement of the array.

Stationary Bike Energy Station

Our energy station will be used by people who desire to exercise and work at the same time. The station will be outfitted with batteries that display their state of charge and other metrics, as well as a connection to an electrical system so that people can charge their phones and electric scooters. We’re in search of people interested in building and implementing power electronics, designing electronic displays, and building furniture.

GT Interactive Piezoelectric Sidewalk

The Energy Club is working with Georgia Tech to design a piezoelectric sidewalk installation to display on campus later this year. If you’re interested in participating on the team, an interest form is available here.

As a part of the team, tasks you may be involved in include:

  • Design of the tile and its electronics, including circuit board design and integration with solar panels, batteries, the piezoelectric elements, etc.
  • Programming of the tile’s electronics
  • Fundraising for the project
  • Engagement with campus administration such as GT Facilities

Dr. Daniel Molzahn

[/av_textblock]

[av_textblock size=’15’ font_color=” color=” av-medium-font-size=” av-small-font-size=” av-mini-font-size=” admin_preview_bg=”]

Daniel Molzahn joined the faculty of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech in Spring 2019. Prior to this position, Dr. Molzahn was a computational engineer at Argonne National Laboratory in the Center for Energy, Environmental, and Economic Systems Analysis (CEEESA), where he currently holds an affiliate position. He was a Dow Postdoctoral Fellow in Sustainability in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Michigan. He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and the Master’s of Public Affairs degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. In his spare time, Dr. Molzahn enjoys hiking, waterskiing, and climbing. Also, as a shareholder of the world’s greatest sporting franchise, he keeps an eye on his investment by watching and attending football games of the 13-time-champion Green Bay Packers football team.

Research interests:
  • Developing optimization and control algorithms in order to improve the environmental sustainability, economic efficiency, and reliability of electric power systems
  • Addressing non-linearities resulting from the power flow equations
  • Developing mathematically rigorous techniques for incorporating uncertainties related to renewable generation and varying load demands
